RW Collins Installs Landfill Ventilation System Despite Extreme Weather

Situation

RW Collins was contracted by an environmental engineering firm to install a passive gas venting system at a former landfill site in the Midwest. The project took place during the winter months when extreme weather was a factor. Accessibility to key areas of the site was also an issue.

The RW Collins Approach

The scope of work was to:

• clear area of vegetation and obstructions
• excavate a six-foot-wide, eight-foot-deep trench for approximately 660 linear ft and haul and stockpile trench materials on site
• furnish and install stone bedding backfill and a gas collection system consisting of perforated PVC collection piping, solid PVC gas piping and 13 PVC risers with vents, which extended 10 ft above grade
• backfill trench with stone to 24 inches below grade
• place non-woven geotextile fabric on top of stone
• furnish and install a concrete base at each riser location
• backfill remaining 24 inches with native backfill
• rough grade the work area
• rough grade remaining soils in stockpile area along the perimeter of the landfill cap

Results

Despite the extreme weather and accessibility issues,
RW Collins successfully installed the landfill cap on time, within budget and in compliance with all EPA regulations.
