The first step in this process was to carefully clear the site after all existing plants were relocated. With the space fully cleared and the old structures demolished, our team began the foundational site work, including grading, utility preparation, and installation of the necessary infrastructure to support the exhibit’s new features.
The majority of this phase involved drilling and installing caissons for the exhibit’s foundations. Using hydraulic drills attached to our excavators, we drilled down approximately 15 feet into the earth. Once the drilling was complete, each hole was filled with reinforced concrete to form caissons—deep foundation elements designed to anchor the jungle gym and other structures securely and ensure their long-term stability. Approximately 50 caissons were installed on this site.
The Garfield Park Conservatory is one of the largest and most historically significant conservatories in the United States. Originally established in the late 19th century and expanded in the early 20th century, it is home to over 2,000 plant species and is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
