RW Collins Successfully Remediates a Large MGP Site Amidst Challenging Conditions
Situation
A major utility company in a large Midwestern city needed remediation work done on an 18-acre former MGP site.
RW Collins was contracted by an environmental engineering firm. The site contained several underground structures as well as high-voltage cables. Adding to these challenges, the site's close proximity to a river required that the RW Collins crew perform much of the work inside coffer dams.
The RW Collins Approach
The scope of work was to excavate and load contaminated soils and replace with compacted stone backfill to bring the site back to grade. This was accomplished by excavating to a predetermined depth, taking confirmation samples and then backfilling with stone placed in one-foot lifts and compacted. This process was done in 40 ft by 40 ft grids across the entire 18 acre site.
Due to the contamination levels, significant portions of this job were performed with the operators and laborers in Level B PPE (supplied air respirators) and necessitated rigorous decontamination procedures for employees, equipment and trucks when leaving the site.
Results
Over the three-year project, more than 450,000 tons of contaminated materials were removed and replaced with compacted stone backfill.
An excess of 60,000 man hours were worked at this project with no lost time accidents.
